Need to practice your Investor Pitch, Elevator Story, presentation, TEDx talk, or part of a speech? Come join us! Drop in, get a chance to practice, and feel more prepared for your next time on the stage.

This will be a facilitated group session: a comfortable, supportive space where you can practice your speaking in front of a small group, get feedback about what is landing well with the audience, and hear what questions they may have. Space is limited.

Presentation Skills: It's All About Body Language

When you find yourself in front of a crowd and speaking, your body language, tone of voice, and energy will connect you to your audience faster and more impactfully than your words.

How do you draw in your audience and keep their attention? How do you fight the jitters? What if you forget what you were going to say!?

In this interactive workshop, everybody moves, and we all take a turn in front of the group.  Power poses, mirror neurons, and what-the-heck-do-I-do-with-my-hands; we will touch on it all.

The aim of preparing your presentation skills is not to practice unnatural showmanship, but to highlight your natural gestures, energy, and authentic relationship with the audience. We will learn about timing, body placement, eye contact, voice tone, emphasis, hand gestures, and landing the ending.

Join us in this workshop in order to feel prepared, to understand your role as a leader from the stage, to present with your natural grace and strength, and to walk off the stage with a sense of accomplishment.

TEDx Talks: What Makes a Great One and How Do You Give One?

Speaking at a TEDx event is full of thrills: sharing your "idea worth spreading" with a receptive audience, connecting to the other speakers, and having the video of your talk shared afterward… to name just a few. But how do you manage to give a TED or TEDx talk?

After supporting over 100 TEDx speakers, I'm excited to share what I've learned. Let's talk about what makes a TED-style talk stand out, the many different kinds of TEDx events, and how to create a GREAT application - which are lessons that can be applied to great talks everywhere.

After this 1/2 day workshop, you will know elements of TEDx talks you can apply to your own speaking, have a better understanding of the TED universe, know steps to find your own “idea worth spreading.”

“What Do You Do?” Make your Elevator Pitch Ring true

We all know that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. When you are asked, “What do you do?” how can your words help someone to know, like, and trust you? Are you prepared to convey both the concrete mission and abstraction vision of your work?

In this interactive session, we will write, discuss, and practice our responses to ubiquitous questions about our work and projects. Looking beyond the “Elevator Pitch,” let’s explore how you share your ideas, vision, and mission with new contacts.

Not only will we craft your personal answers, but we will discuss principles and tools of public speaking to help you speak with impact, whoever your audience may be. We will practice and get facilitated feedback from the group.

This intimate workshop will help you look closely at what you value in your work, how you arrived there, and give you tools to speak about yourself in front of people with fluency and confidence.

Experienced Participant:

I am the Executive Director at Harvest of Hope Pantry in Boulder, and we recently hired Margaret to assist our Board with finding cohesion around our messaging both as a unit, and also in support of individuals sharing their own personal message about why they’re involved with Harvest of Hope Pantry. As an organization, we are rather young (6 years) and have experienced a lot of growth and change. With that, we had found ourselves a little disconnected with our “why” and our “what.” Margaret really helped us do the work as a group to get clear about that, and she did it in a way that was fun, engaging and fostered feelings of camaraderie. At the end of the workshop, we were going around to share what we had learned, and our Board Chair said: “I learned that these sorts of things don’t have to be painful, and can actually lead to tangible outcomes!” Our Board is now on a journey of building confidence in communicating their messages so we can continue to get donors and create awareness in our community about who we are, what we do, and why we do it. Stories will be remembered long after your balance sheet or business plan have been forgotten. So how can you incorporate stories into your professional communication?

In this interactive session, after we discuss why stories are so impactful to our human brains, we will tell and hear a few of each other’s stories to explore:

  • Understanding common story formats from ancient Greece to today’s podcasts

  • Creating strong starts, satisfying endings, and the messy middle

  • Telling simple stories on the spot (Don’t worry, we will set you up well for this!)

  • Developing your personal “Origin Story” to accompany your “Elevator Pitch.”
